New tools including one that allows users to search for people with active arrest warrants, and an online scheduling option for jail visitation, were also added. And visitors gained the ability to sign up for e-mail newsletters and other Sheriff’s Office communications – something citizens were asking for.

Moore’s Stone Crab
Moore’s Stonecrab Restaurant was the beginning of a dream come true for the Moore & Hicks family in 1967 . This is the oldest seafood restaurant under the same ownership in Manatee County. The Moore & Hicks  family has a long history in the seafood business, with over 200 combined years of experience. In 1927 Papa Jack Moore started walking the flats of the bays getting stone crabs by hand. As his bussiness grew he started rowing a boat up and down the coast, sleeping on the beach atnight. The outboard motor came years later . All traps are built by hand even today. Papa Jack worked about 50 to 75 traps ,today our boats work as many as140,000 traps. Our boats work the traps each day from October 15 to May 15 to bring in fresh crabs for the restaurant. The claws are carefully removed and the live crabs returned to the waters to regenerate new ones. A good day's catch will run between 2,000 and 4,000 pounds of claws. Trapping is done between the Florida Keys and Clearwater Beach (Gulf side). During a season, we serve between 350,000 and 400,000 pounds of stonecrab claws. Most of our seafood comes from the local fishermen.

You may dine in one of two glass walled, casually elegant dining rooms or outside on the dockside open air patio.

Pops Sunset Grill
Pop's Sunset Grill is one of Western Florida's favorite dining landmarks - well loved by locals and tourists alike for its casual atmosphere and fresh local fare. Year after year, customers gather from near and far to relax and enjoy the view overlooking the Intracoastal Waterway while they enjoy good food and friends. Pop's has been in operation for over 30 years, in what was originally Ubaneks Fish House and Pop's Tropigrill Restaurant. Since then, Pop's Sunset Grill has grown to become one of the most popular restaurants and night spots in the Venice area. In November of 2001, Pop's was purchased by new owners who were a group of individuals brought together collectively during the 2002 Olympic Games in Salt Lake City. As friendships developed, the group decided that when the event was over, they would partner together and purchase a bar/restaurant to give them a common reason to stay in touch. Pop's seemed like the perfect place! Some of the owners are local to Nokomis and have lived here for years, for others it provides an oasis. Each with their own family, they all visit Pop's on a regular basis.

Caragiulos
Memories are being served. Caragiulos became one of Sarasota’s most popular eateries in much the same way the family found the cozy storefront on Palm Avenue, with… ease. From his bakery in Brooklyn, Tony Caragiulo and his five sons came to Florida in pursuit of an agreeable location to open a simple Italian restaurant. After an exhausting, two week long car trek around Florida with no prospects and tempers flaring, Tony signaled for the car to pull over; “Stoppa the*#!*#!!!!car!,… This is it,” he declared, pointing to the vacant stucco location… And it was.

Mozaic
The idea of MoZaic restaurant came alive more than ten years ago while brainstorming words that could define the kind of cuisine, service, and atmosphere we desire to bring to our guests. The Southern French- and Mediterranean-inspired cuisine is flavorful, fresh, and fits into the healthier lifestyle popular in Southwest Florida. MoZaic is committed to a guest-friendly cuisine that is seasonal and market driven, utilizing fruits and vegetables from local farmers and seafood from surrounding waters. Chef Dylan Elhajoui offers a cuisine that is adventurous yet familiar, innovative yet disciplined, expressive yet intelligent. It’s southern European, western Mediterranean, and uniquely American—flavors of the modern mosaic—utilizing familiar influences from cultures that create beautiful mosaics. They also reflect a mosaic of cultures, the diversity that affects their gastronomy in a rich and delicious way. MoZaic restaurant reflects all of these influences, which in turn will attract a mosaic of guests—many cultures, colors, ages—who love fresh, seasonal and wonderful food. The ingredients are familiar, but the expression of them is unique and satisfying, inspired and inspiring.

The atmosphere here is enchanting and peaceful, the Italian cuisine reminiscent of that created by some of the greatest Italian Chefs. Relax and enjoy your stay with us. State Street Eating House
Enter State Street and in an instant you’re in a Mid-Century Industrial Chic eating-house! The space, that was recently a defunct bakery has been restored to its Mid–Century bones. To the original walls we have added distressed brickwork, and yes, elegant wallpapers!  From the utilization of  its original exposed rafters to the use of reclaimed lumber, iron and concrete features, the eatery is a testament to urban cool meets green building! Chef Christian Hershman could easily rest on his substantial culinary laurels, but that would not be Christian! It’s a given that his fare will be fresh, innovative and down right delicious, but in creating State Street, he goes beyond the food to the experience.
Lavanda
Co-owners/chefs Dino and Heidi Moon opened Lavanda to rave reviews in October of 2001. Classically trained in the culinary and hospitality arts in Sarajevo, site of the 1984 Winter Olympic games, they aim to provide casual yet elegant dining with Mediterranean influenced dishes. Dino's first restaurant, also in 1984, was located near Dubrovnik, Croatia. Lavanda is located somewhat off the beaten path in that it is literally in the middle of the city block of art galleries and shops known as the Towles Court Arts District. Enjoy outdoor dining on our wrap-around porch unlike any in Sarasota. As you can see from the quotes below, Lavanda is well worth finding. Dino and Heidi welcome you..... "You'll think you've died and gone to heaven with your first bite of Gianduia" "The beef filet was so tender you could cut it with a fork!" "I could have the MOZZARELLA AND TOMATO as a meal....just add a glass of wine for perfection!"

Entertainment

The Asolo Theatre
The Asolo Theatre is housed in the Florida State University Center for the Performing Arts. In any single weekend, theater goers can select from as many as four different plays. The professional Asolo Theatre Company performs in the Harold E. and Ester M. Mertz Theatre which was brought to Sarasota from Dunfermline, Scotland and is a majestic, 500 seat former opera house which is the main performing space for the Asolo Theatre Company. Plays range from classics to new works performed in rotating reparatory from November to June. The Jane B. Cook Theatre, an intimate 161 seat, features performances by second-year FSU/Asolo Conservancy for Actor Training student seeking their MFA degrees.
The Sarasota Ballet
Sarasota Ballet founder Jean Weidner’s dream was to establish a professional ballet company that would be the pride of Sarasota. Now, twenty years later, her vision has blossomed through the seasons into an exceptional company of dancers with great talent and artistry. For our historic season, we will have a once in a lifetime opportunity to celebrate at our 20th Anniversary Gala with our founder Jean Weidner for a special evening down ‘Memory Lane’. During the height of the season we’ll feature the source of some of our most recent successes, ballets by Sir Frederick Ashton, Dame Ninette de Valois, a full evening dedicated to the great George Balanchine, a world première by Dominic Walsh and new to the repertoire, Twyla Tharp’s In The Upper Room. Finally, we are delighted to welcome back Johan Kobborg for a program celebrating the Bournonville Ballets and traditions of The Royal Danish Ballet. It is our great pleasure and honour to take the company into its exciting 20th Anniversary season, and the future.
The Sarasota Opera
In 1960 the group, then called the Asolo Opera Guild was formed to present the touring Turnau Opera in chamber-sized productions in the historic 320 seat Asolo Theater on the grounds of Sarasota's Ringling Museum of Art. In 1973 the company began mounting its own productions. Recognizing the need for a theater more conducive to opera, the company purchased the former A.B. Edwards Theater in downtown Sarasota in 1979. Renovations began in 1982 and the theater, now on the National Register of Historic Places, opened in 1984 as the Sarasota Opera House, the company it housed now being called Sarasota Opera.
The Van Wezel Performing Arts Hall
Set along Sarasota's beautiful bayfront, the landmark Van Wezel Performing Arts Hall has been entertaining audiences with a variety of music, dance, theater and comedy for more than 35 years. Built in 1968 with funds from a city bond referendum and a bequest from philanthropists Lewis and Eugenia Van Wezel, the Van Wezel opened its doors in 1970 with a production of Fiddler on the Roof. Since then, the Hall has welcomed a broad range of performers and shows, including world-class symphonies, both classical and modern dance companies, jazz artists, pop legends, Comedy and Broadway. The Van Wezel's educational and outreach programs have also touched the community, reaching out to everyone from toddlers to senior citizens. The Van Wezel Performing Arts Hall and the Sarasota County School Board are members of the prestigious Performing Arts Centers and Schools: Partners in Education Program of the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts. This partnership provides professional development workshops for teachers. With its renovation in 2000, the Hall contains 25,000 more square feet than before, meaning larger lobbies and Grand Foyer, more restrooms, a new stagehouse, the latest in sound and lighting systems, and an Education Center. The 1,736-seat Hall is completely compliant with the Americans with Disabilities Act, and is owned and operated by the City of Sarasota. The 6,000 square foot Grand Foyer comfortably seats 35-350, and opens onto the Terrace and Bayfront lawn accommodating an additional 1500. Smaller groups will enjoy the Selby Education Center, Founders Lounge and Greenroom with seating for up to 30 in small groups or breakout sessions.

Sarasota Film Festival
In July 1998, international and independent film enthusiasts founded the Sarasota Film Festival, Inc. (SFF). They sought to create a balanced festival of foreign and domestic film complemented by the participation of the film and entertainment industry. The following January, SFF launched its first festival. The “mini-festival” featured eight independent films, two premiere screenings, two educational symposiums and a gala fundraiser. Since then, SFF has grown in length (from three days to ten), attendance (from 2,300 attendees to over 45,000) and scope (from 10 screenings to hosting over 200 films and adding nationally-recognized education programs, dozens of  special events, talkbacks and panels with some of the leading voices in film today). Beyond the Festival, SFF has expanded to include year-round activities like the free outdoor Moonlight Movies series in Sarasota, Bradenton, Lakewood Ranch and Venice; Monday Night Movies at the newly-restored Asolo Theater; Screenwriters' Circle; and more.

Hip and historical, entertaining and challenging, we are the theatre where the street meets the elite, where everyone is welcome to come and engage in the art of theatre.
The Players Theatre
Although The Players Theatre is a non-professional community theatre, being located on the “Cultural Coast” gives us an incredible talent pool to work with. From our Artistic Director to our stage hands, literally half of the volunteers working on a production have at one time been professionally paid performers. Many professional performers retire and are drawn to the area thanks to all of Sarasota’s arts offerings.  These professionals bring their experience, training, their families and often extensive resumes with them to our stage.

Lake Manatee State Park
Lake Manatee State Park extends along three miles of the south shore of Lake Manatee, our namesake, which serves as a water reservoir for Manatee and Sarasota counties. Despite the name of the lake and park, visitors cannot actually see manatees at this park because of the dam on the Manatee River. The park habitat consists primarily pine flatwoods and sand pine scrub with some depression marshes and hardwood forests. A boat ramp provides easy access to the lake; boat motors must be less than 20 horsepower. Canoeing and kayaking are popular activities. The lake offers excellent freshwater fishing, and anglers can fish from their boats or from the park's fishing dock. Swimming is permitted in a designated area, however water plants from the lake are frequently blown ashore and lifeguards are not provided. A facility with showers is located nearby. A large picnic area is nestled in a sand pine scrub area near the lake. A picnic pavilion may be reserved for a fee. Campers can enjoy full-facility camping, just a short walk from the lake. Located 15 miles east of Bradenton on State Road 64.

Bone Appetite
As you can see, I started my love of animals at a very early age. When my parents took me to the county fair for the first time, I was not interested in the Tilt-A-Whirl, but when they took me by the ponies that you could ride, I got on and would not get off without crying!!! I have had a love of dogs, big or small, since I began to walk, so anytime I was around them, I found myself smiling and wishing I could be around them all the time. As I started school and became active in sports, I found myself involving my dogs in my training for track. You might say it was the early stages of an agility course, but I didn’t know that back then! I jumped hurdles, so consequently, my dogs all learned to jump as well. I rode Quarter horses competitively most of my life with many fabulous awards, travel and recognitions that I will never forget.

Venice Municipal Airport (VNC) was built in the early 1940s by the United States government to serve as a flight training facility during World War II. At the end of the war, the airport was given to the City of Venice with the stipulation that if it were not used as an airport it would revert back to the U.S. government. Today it is a general aviation facility located 1.7 miles south of the downtown area, along the Gulf of Mexico shoreline, on approximately 835 acres. It has two 5,000-foot runways which intersect each other. They are both 150 feet wide, have medium intensity runway lighting (MIRL), runway end identifier lights (REILS) and precision approach path indicators (PAPI).
