Year-Round Fun With a Sarasota Vacation Rental

Monday, May 15, 2017

“When is the best time to visit Sarasota?” It’s a question that we at Jennette Properties get all the time. The truth really is that any time of year is the perfect time for a Sarasota vacation.

There is always something unique to see or experience in Sarasota. And with the beautiful year-round weather and warm sun, any “season” is beach season. No matter when you’re looking for a visit, or what you’re interested in doing, Sarasota has something special waiting for you.

Florida “Seasons”

As we said before, our seasons aren’t as traditional as other places. Sarasota’s seasons are not always based on foliage or calendar, but by what’s where at a particular time. A few of our “seasons” include turtle, citrus, berries, fish, rain, and manatees.

Turtle nesting season: May 1st – October 31st
Nesting areas are marked along the beaches and rescued hatchlings can be viewed at Mote Marine. If you’re staying on the beach during this time it’s important to please keep your lights out at night so the turtles can find their way to shore.

Citrus season (including oranges, grapefruit, lemons, and kumquats): Peaks from January – March
Citrus becomes especially sweet after a cold front (by Florida standards) comes through.

Strawberry season: October – May
Local markets are the perfect spots to pick up some fresh berries. You can also find a farm to pick your own!

Tarpon season: Peaks during May – July
Other fish seasons include snook, which can be kept starting in September and through the end of November and again March through the end of April.

Stone crab season: October 15th – May 15th

Rainy season: Summer afternoons
It’s likely you’ll see some afternoon showers appear most afternoons during the summer months. Typically short and warm, it gives beachgoers a daily reminder to pop out of the sun to reapply that sunscreen and have a snack before coming back for the sunset.

Manatees season: Late spring – Early fall
Manatees enjoy warmer water and can be seen frequently throughout the Bay, Gulf, Intercoastal, Phillippi Creek. Once it starts getting cooler out, they often retreat into natural springs or held over to the Big Bend Power Station in Apollo Beach to stay warm.

Annual Events in Sarasota

There are plenty of fun annual events to look forward to in Sarasota and the surrounding areas. There are so many that we can’t possibly name them all, so we’ll give you the biggest event for each month of the year.

January: New Year’s Eve
While New Year’s Eve happens all over the world, Sarasota celebrates in its own way with the Pineapple Drop. Imagine Times Square but less crowded, warm, and everyone downtown is watching an illuminated pineapple.

February: Cortez Fishing Festival
This festival brings in the Old Florida charm. Taste the freshest fish imaginable served along ten blocks filled with music, crafts, and fishing history.

March: Spring Break
During Spring Break, visitors from around the world come to experience the world-class beaches in the area. But don’t worry! If you’re not into the spring break crowd, there are some more secluded beaches you can relax on instead.

April: Sarasota Film Festival
The Sarasota Film Festival is an annual 10-day event with over 200 hundred films, more than 250 filmmakers in attendance, multiple special events, symposiums, panels and conversations featuring leaders in the film industry.

May: St. Armand’s Seafood and Music Festival
Enjoy delectable seafood dishes prepared by local Sarasota restaurants using indigenous and sustainable seafood resources from Florida's coastal waters.

June: Savor Sarasota Restaurant Week
Can you tell yet that Sarasota locals love food? Savor Sarasota Restaurant Week spans two weeks and features many of Sarasota’s Zagat-rated restaurants with prix-fixe menus to excite your taste buds and wallet.

July: Grand Prix Powerboat Races
The Grand Prix Powerboat Races bring a week full of activities for the entire family to enjoy and two full days of racing excitement where you can watch sleek speedboats zip through the water from land or sea. Don’t forget about fireworks!

August: Sarasota Beer Fest
Grab a cold one or two at the Sarasota Beer Fest. You can choose from a variety of 80 local and national craft beers. Plus, there will be food samples from local restaurants, live music, non-alcoholic beverages and more.

September: Labor Day Regatta
For 70 years, hundreds of sailors have gathered from across the continent to participate in the Sarasota Sailing Squadron’s Labor Day Regatta.

October: Halloween
May not seem that different than any other place, but Sarasota offers plenty of spooky activities for Halloween. Sarasota’s celebration features underwater pumpkin carving in shark-infested waters. Mote Marine’s annual Night of Fish, Fun, and Fright merges candy and fish into one spooky undersea evening.

November: Crystal Classic International Sand Sculpting Festival
Spectators are welcome to watch as incredible sculptors create their art as well as to participate in the judging on the last day. Music, food, drinks, and crafts make the festival complete.

December: Holiday Boat Parade
With so much going on around the holidays, it’s hard to choose just one event, but the Holiday Boat Parade truly is a magical, Floridian experience.
